WRITER'S BLOCK, Issue #06-Merry Christmas
December 01, 2015
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!
Why I write
Here we go again, another newsletter.
This time is rather unusual because I’m writing this particular piece of deathless prose without any instructions from Kanga and Roo, better known as Ulva the Magnificent and the Coveted Laura. In short, I’m doing this before they get a chance to tell me to do this. It’s a wonderful feeling, actually, and probably the only time it will ever happen.
The new Crockett novel, Witness Rejection, has been released as an eBook. As a writer I try not to play favorites with any of the characters in my books. In my twisted imagination, they are nearly real people to me. After all, I create them and their lives and troubles, triumphs, joys and sorrows. They are my chance to play God, and I do not take that lightly. In spite of that, I must admit that the fifth Crockett book is my favorite in the series, as least so far. Crockett truly begins to find himself in this novel, and that is something many of us spend a lifetime trying to do.
Most of the old characters are in this book, but there are also few new additions to the cast that I really enjoy. In this effort you’ll meet Carson Bailey (that’s her on the cover), Dale Smoot (a small town police chief), Satin Kelly (a waitress at Wagers Café), a cop named Montero, a lovely young woman of dubious morality who calls herself Puma, and some seriously bad badguys.
Have fun. I did.
(An homage to Calvin and Hobbs creator, Bill Watterson.)
But, first a message about BookBub!
Bookbub.com…a wonderful site for sampling indie writing. And, a wonderful place for indie writers to introduce their wares at low prices…or for FREE!
Actually, I didn’t know this site even existed until I was searching for places to advertise David’s books. I signed up as a member (it’s free) just so I could see how the site worked. It’s amazing. My tablet is now loaded with books I have decided would be worth reading. And, though I haven’t read all of the books, I have found a few authors who I will definitely follow up on.
I will admit, for me, deciding whether to download a book takes a certain amount of deep thought. So, I have devised a plan. First, I read some critical reviews just to see what people might be complaining about. (What can I say except that I find many of those reviews extremely entertaining.) Then, I spend a little time reading the positive reviews and weighing them against the others. (Seriously, I think I have the most fun determining which reviews are going to sway me!) Anyway, if you haven’t visited BookBub, you might consider checking them out. Beyond the fun factor, it’s a good way to find new authors without spending a lot of money. Once you find an author you like, then there is less risk that you’ll buy something you hate. Love it.
On the serious side, BookBub is an awesome way for an author to get discovered; but getting selected to be advertised on BookBub is rather difficult. It’s a popular site. A lot of authors send in applications daily. And, prices for the advertising is rather high. That hasn’t stopped us from submitting David’s books, though. We know that most authors have to submit many, many times before they get selected. So we submit. And, when the required time has passed, we submit again. There’s no giving up in this business!
Now, for the HELP part
There is one thing our wonderful fans can do for us, though. If you have read DEER RUN TRAIL or FEAR OF THE FATHER and haven’t put a review up on Amazon, would you do that for us? One of the criteria for BookBub is Amazon reviews. The more we have, the better our chances are at getting an advertising date. Though we haven’t gotten on BookBub as a selection of the day, we have created a profile page for David. You might what to check it out…and if you join BookBub, you might what to mark David as an author to follow. Here are the links.
The sign-in button is on top right. Once it is clicked, it will also give a place to sign up.
Ah, David’s profile page...don't worry, soon all of his books will be listed. Once you are a member, this is also where you can find a button to click so you can follow David. Thank you. David’s fans are our foundation. Ulva
