Jethro says, "Happy Thanksgiving!"
How I Got This Way…
Jethro, the Wunderhundt
...Unvarnished and Untarnished
There is a hole in my home this evening. But, I don’t mean an actual gaping empty spot in the wall or floor of my house.
A house is a physical thing, but a home is more ethereal than that. It is a space that cannot be measured with a carpenter’s rule because it exists in the same place that love and relationships and understanding do. There is a hole in that space tonight because our dog, Jethro the Wunderhundt, is not here. He’s fine, not damaged or ill, but at the veterinarian’s kennel because the coveted Laura and I had to take to the road today and did not get back in time to return Jethro to the homestead. We will get him tomorrow.
Jethro is an Australian Cattle Dog…the red variety, or red heeler as they are also known. He is the third Cattle Dog to come into our lives over the years, the first two being blue heelers.
To my knowledge, Jethro has never met anyone, dog or human, he didn’t like. That is a good thing because working heelers are notoriously fast, fearless, and bitey dogs, the kind that can turn a two thousand pound bull into a nervous wreck in mere moments. Their courage and ability to battle are astounding; and Jethro, for whatever reason, is also significantly larger than the average Cattle Dog.
When Laura and I got him as a pup, he had never been inside a house or handled by human beings. He was as wild as he could be, had needles for teeth, and didn’t have a clue it wasn’t nice to make me bleed. Fortunately, we had another Cattle Dog at the time, the late Miss Clancy, who took Jethro under her wing and taught him manners, the art of cuddling, and how to fight if need be.
In addition to always wanting to be a part of what is going on outside, whether it be barking at deer and turkey or Frisbee retrieval and other joyous events, Jethro has assigned to himself other duties. During a lot of the day and every night, he is Laura’s sidekick, watching over her, taking care of “Mom.” The rest of the time, he is my writing partner. If I am back in my cave pounding away at a keyboard, he is there, lying at my feet, working hard to be my muse. Every hour or so he’ll put a chin on my knee for a pat then return to what has become his job, being the balance point of my writing. I have never encouraged him to hang with me while I bleed from the eyes. He has assumed that role that all by himself. So here I sit, writing without him. I don’t like it. Jethro being gone is more than a hole in my home. It is very near a hole in my soul.
That’s why one particular quote from Groucho Marx means so much to me. “Outside a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside a dog, it’s too dark to read.”
I’ll have to mention that to Jethro when he gets home. He might not understand it, but he will be happy that I told him.

the TRAIL series
GLORY TRAIL will be available for pre-order in eBook format November 11th on Amazon, Smashwords, and other major distributors!
A wagon train of hopefuls have a chance for a new beginning and a better life by leaving the war-torn South and relocating in Kansas. Unfortunately, old habits die hard; and the truth can come to mean very little. Join Ruben, Marion, and Homer as they fight for justice on the GLORY TRAIL.
Finally--DEER RUN TRAIL, the paperback, has been formatted to our satisfaction, and we are happy with the proof.
Amazon says it will be up and selling in 5 to 7 business day. So, keep watch! It's really happening...just not in as timely a matter as we wanted.
(This publishing business isn't easy. There always seems to be so much hurry up and wait. I guess you could say we might be control freaks...'cuz none of us around here do very well with what we can't control.)
UPDATE: We discovered today (10/30) that the paperback is live on Amazon now! (Yep, we put together the newsletter last Thursday. Don't tell anyone) So, we are planning to make some signed copies available for purchase...and we are even going to give a few away. To get more details on this, keep watch of our Facebook page, Ironbear eBooks...I put the link below.
We'll keep updating things like when the books arrive at our door, when David starts signing, and all that other important stuff!
the CROCKETT series
Plans are coming along nicely for releasing the 7th book in the CROCKETT series, Behind the Badge: Small Town Troublemakers in early 2017!
Behind the BadgeCrockett takes a part time job as a small-town cop and becomes suspicious of a local nightclub. With the help of the Missouri State Police, a cute undercover operative, and the ever-present Stitch, Crockett begins an investigation that leads to murder, mayhem, and more when he goes BEHIND THE BADGE.
To get you in the right mood for Crockett and the gang, here's a link to the latest YouTube video...it just happens to be from SITUATIONAL FLEXIBILITY, the 3rd book in the CROCKETT series. Ole Clete is giving Crockett a little lecture on relationships versus committments.
AND MORE NEWS: The 8th and final book in the CROCKETT series is SIX CUT KILL. David has finished the script, but the book is not ready for release yet. Though plans are a bit on the "iffy" side right now, it could be out by late 2017 or very early 2018.
We named the channel David R Lewis. So, you can just type in David's name, and the YouTube search engine will pull it up, or you can click on any of the links below.
Just published on October 27, 2016
David performs some excerpts from his books, shares some memories of his youth, and rants a little about the writing process.
