WRITER'S BLOCK, Issue #11-David R Lewis Happenings; 2 new playlists on YouTube
July 01, 2016

The newsletter is a little on the skimpy side this month. David is dealing with an abscessed tooth that ended up being extracted. Laura is dealing with figuring out how to keep David fed and comfortable since those two things are a challenge right now as anyone who has gone through this sort of thing knows. And Ulva...well, she's just getting old. So, Ironbear decided everyone needed a little vacation. Rueben, Homer, and Marion agreed. (Little Bill doesn't mind at all. It gives him a chance to go riding with Rueben and Arliss the Mule!)

However, David did write a little something, and Calvin showed up. (Hobbs finally let him out of the dryer.)

We even posted a link for a recently uploaded YouTube Video from Killdeer trail: Kentucky Woman. (By the way, we now have 6 playlist on our channel. We added INCIDENTS AMONG THE SAVAGES and the NOSFERATI saga!)

Ya'll have a safe and happy 4th of July.

The Ironbear Gang

Why I write

I recently spent a few days in my old hometown for a reunion with some wonderful men and truly fine musicians who I had the privilege of working with nearly fifty years ago. Memories flowed like wine and laughter like the Snake River in flood stage. I loved it, and I loved the remembrance of my youth when the life that stretched before me was endless and anything was possible.

I’m a little bitter about that now, however. Those guys are all retired, and I’m not. (But, of course, they’re all a year or two older than I am!)

The list of the jobs in my life, while not particularly outstanding, is a little unusual. Most people don’t get to be cops or cowboys or radio personalities. Most people don’t want to be those things, and I don’t blame them. Those jobs read better than they live. I don’t know anyone who claims it is fun to be shot at. Most of us would not enjoy falling off a horse. And radio…

At a personal appearance event for a country radio station many years ago, a man approached me and said these words. “Must be nice to just git to the radio station at six in the mornin’, an’ act like a fool for five hours.” I told him it was and invited him to join me the next day. Of course, he’d have to be up at two-thirty and at the station around three-thirty to prepare for the show. Afterwards there would be bits to produce, commercials to write and record, and other stuff to do; but he’d get home around four or five p.m. Saturdays were easier, however. They were usually only about a six hour day.

Very few of us can appreciate what it takes to do a job we have never done. I have no conception of what it takes to be an office manager or a high school teacher or a waitperson or a pediatrician. I cannot even imagine what those people do every day of their working lives.

But now, in my working life, I depend on my imagination for nearly everything I do. As of this newsletter I have written twenty-two novels, one memoir, and am working on novel number twenty-three. And this very day, it came to me that my job, my real job, is to put words in the mouths of people who do not exist.

I mulled over that for a while, and I have decided that I like it. If it is true that we do not hear with our ears, see with our eyes, or touch with our fingers, and such; and all of that input comes only from our brain, maybe my characters, in some small way, do exist. If that is true, they will all be around a lot longer than I.

I think that’s kinda cool.

(An homage to Calvin and Hobbs creator, Bill Watterson.)

Plans are in the works for releasing the next book in the CROCKETT series, Behind the Badge: Small Town Troublemakers in early 2017!

Crockett takes a part time job as a small-town cop and becomes suspicious of a local nightclub. With the help of the Missouri State Police, a cute undercover operative, and the ever-present Stitch, Crockett begins an investigation that leads to murder, mayhem, and more when he goes BEHIND THE BADGE.

Trail News

Work has slowed down a bit on Glory Trail. The Marshals are kindly tired and need a little break. But, they'll be back in the saddle soon. Don't worry, David still has their back trail...and that of his fans, too!

We named the channel David R Lewis. So, you can just type in David's name, and the YouTube search engine will pull it up, or you can click on the link below.

What you will find is a channel that has six playlists at the moment: the TRAIL series, the CROCKETT series, the NOSFERATI series, Heartland Memories, Incidents Among the Savages, and Thoughts on Writing.

David performs some excerpts from his books, shares some memories of his youth, and rants a little about the writing process.
