Fall...what a beautiful time!

(Unless, of course, it happens right after a stumble.)

Why I write...

I took some time the other day to go through the reviews and ratings of my books, both in eBook and eAudiobook formats. I went only to Amazon and Audible to keep my snooping within reason, and neglected Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, iBooks, Kobo, Goodreads, and the others.

I was amazed. I had nearly seventeen hundred reviews and ratings. Not only that, but the vast majority of those reviews and ratings were at four and a half stars or higher, and I was often rather startled about how many kind things were written about my characters and stories.

Resisting the urge to pat myself on the back, primarily because I can’t reach it anymore, I gave some thought as to how this had happened and came to the conclusion that most of it isn’t my doing. So, whose fault is it? First of all, I blame Ulva Eldridge.

Back in 2005 when I started writing seriously and my bride had gone off to spend over four years living in a tent in Afghanistan, (not joking) a mutual friend introduced Ulva and me. At the time Ulva was a high school English teacher. She read some of my stuff and immediately retired from educating our young people to begin an assault on my rather haphazard use of commas. Since then, she has become both my proofreader and editor. If I could have designed a sister, she would have been the blueprint.

My wife, the coveted Laura, is certainly not off the hook. She returned home from the land of camel spiders and incoming weaponry to support me as I scratched out my deathless prose. Her patience is astounding and, because she can never be sure which of my characters might walk out of my writing cave, her courage is amazing. She and Ulva have become very close, and the two of them labor relentlessly to impose my prose on the unsuspecting masses.

Then there is Joel Becker. He and I met in the radio biz and have been friends for over twenty years. Joel is responsible for my eAudiobook recordings and my YouTube stuff. Joel is wonderful at making me sound better than I really do. Unfortunately, I’m beyond help for the video portion of our work.

Jack Davis is another contributor to the effort. Jack and I played in several bands together nearly fifty years ago and, because of my writing, reunited after over forty years in 2014. Jack is a very talented graphic design artist and is responsible for all of my book covers.

There are many other people who encourage me, share my posts, and inflict my prose on others. Paul Hollis, a fine and respected author, is one of those wonderful individuals. Another is Joe Swann. Joe and his family and friends have treated Laura, Ulva, and me marvelously, including flying us to their home in Tennessee to spend a few days and meet some fans.

The result of all that is kind words directed at me from people I do not know and will probably never meet. It is very gratifying, and I appreciate you all at least as much as you seem to appreciate me. And, there it is. A short list of why I’ve received those reviews and ratings, and where the fault truly lies.

Me? I just go into the dark, close the door, and string words together.

Release Updates!

the TRAIL series

For all you TRAIL fans...GOOD NEWS! The boys are back home, safe and sound. (Yep, David finished GLORY TRAIL.) The book still needs to be edited and made to look all pretty. And, it won't be too long until David is in studio to record it. We're working away just as fast as we can and sure do appreciate your patience loyalty. Thank you.

And, because you are so awesome, here is a sneak preview of the cover!!

We mentioned last month that Ulva and Laura were working on the paperback format of DEER RUN TRAIL. The girls have gotten it figured out...they think. Jack has the paperback cover designed and delivered. The book should be up for sale in about a month. Then, the girls have plans to get all the other books in paperback form just as quickly as they can.

the CROCKETT series

Plans are in the works for releasing the 7th book in the CROCKETT series, Behind the Badge: Small Town Troublemakers in early 2017!

Crockett takes a part time job as a small-town cop and becomes suspicious of a local nightclub. With the help of the Missouri State Police, a cute undercover operative, and the ever-present Stitch, Crockett begins an investigation that leads to murder, mayhem, and more when he goes BEHIND THE BADGE.

AND MORE NEWS: We had a question last month about the rest of the CROCKETT books. The 8th and final book in the CROCKETT series is SIX CUT KILL. David has finished the script, but the book is not ready for release yet. Though plans are a bit on the "iffy" side right now, it could be out by late 2017 or very early 2018.
