How I Got This Way...

Valentine's Day

When Ulva the Magnificent and the Coveted Laura expressed their combined desire that I write a bit about Valentine’s Day, I didn’t feel terribly excited about the project. The main reason for that response was my computer had quit functioning. So, I found myself faced with the fact I actually had to write this piece with pen and ink. I’ve written a lot that way. Thirty thousand or so pieces of commercial copy and my first book were all written with pen and paper.

But now, while my bride is at Ulva’s house as they struggle to figure out why my computer has lost its mind, I seem to have lost the ability to write with a pen. The passage of time and technology has reduced what was once a totally readable “hand” to a totally unreadable foot.

But, I regress.

My first thoughts about Valentine’s Day took me all the way back to my early grade school years. Dozens of Valentine cards had to be noted and signed before being distributed to every other kid in the class. Then, the similar clutter had to come back my way. Cranking out twenty-five or thirty of the things was not really much fun, but it did have a purpose. Scattered amid those cards was always a handmade masterpiece designed to impress some goddess in my class. I can’t remember it working, though.

This will be my 70th Valentine’s Day. I have no particular reason to celebrate that, but what is worth celebrating is it will also be my 47th Valentine’s Day with Laura. That puts the whole grade school thing in perspective.

Have a great Valentine’s Day.

P.S. Ulva and Laura got my computer working again. Thank goodness!!

Transplanted from a life of wealth and duty in Philadelphia to the wilds of Kansas City by her career-hungry and inattentive husband, Lucin Montgomery becomes a displaced stranger in a strange land. Her disillusionment with her life and her marriage begins a search for her own sexual identity; a seductive journey of self-awareness that leads from visions of the Willow World of an ancient Japanese courtesan, to the sensual appreciation of her own female essence, to the liberating reminder from a long-dead grandmother that femininity and the ways it may be exploited are without limit, and love has a life of its own.
