by Farley Mowat

There was a time when both dogs and kids were allowed to run free, and it was during that time that the author, Farley Mowat, and his dog, Mutt, grew up on the plains of Canada. THE DOG WHO WOULDN’T BE is a story of the life of the dog and the childhood of the man.

Mutt was a mutt. Farley’s dad wanted a hunting dog, but money was tight during the great depression, so Farley’s mother bought the boy a puppy for a penny, and never has a cent had more value. Mutt was a truly remarkable dog with considerable intelligence and insight. When coupled with a footloose boy and an understanding family, Mutt soared to doggie heights unimagined by the average canine. He was a dog among dogs with a boy among boys, and little else is required for a marvelous book.

Imagine, if you will, a dog who climbs trees and ladders, who is friends with two owls, who wears goggles while riding in the rumble seat of the family flivver, who can encounter a skunk at exactly the wrong time, and who, when a real game bird is unavailable, will retrieve a stuffed one on command.

THE DOG WHO WOULDN’T BE is a work of art, a true masterpiece of dog and boy. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry and you will not be able to read it only once. Do yourself and the kid that still lives within you a favor. Join Farley Mowat and the dog who wouldn’t be.
